Ty's FIRST 5 - Start With These New Songs 2/5
Music has been streaming from “Babygirl Bentli’s 1st Playlist” and its been invigorating! People who listen to The Ty Bentli Show from all around the globe, shared their suggestions for the best representations of music, ever. These are the first songs my daughter, Teddi - born Tuesday! - ever heard. Starting with one that was special in our house because it was written about memories of her own family: “Callaway Gardens” by Corri English
I’ve posted my suggestions for the first five songs you should hear, this week, and they include more special stories of family, and reflect the love and appreciation I’m feeling after our family grew this week. I also enjoy keeping this playlist diverse in quality, message and artists so that you genuinely have a few different lanes to choose from once you get into the new stuff! Let’s GO!
Here are the FIRST 5 new songs I recommend you listen to, this week…
“A Dance” - Julia Cole
I went back and forth on whether or not to mention that this song was written about my life. But it was, and I’m pretty proud of that. This is a song that Julia Cole wrote with the one person who knows love in the same way that I know it. This song connects for me as a formerly self-aware commitmentphobe, leading up to the day that I kissed Corri in my kitchen in LA, and began a life of adventures - the same adventures that I thought would be muted once I became part of a ‘couple.’ Surprise skydives, spur-of-the-moment flights to Chicago, cross-country road trips, archery in the morning, and sneaking off to the courthouse in New York City. The adventures continue.
For anyone who has ever felt free as a bird - excited to be a unique individual on this planet - and then bumped into the person that would change all of that. Julia has one of the most-identifiable, cool, controlled voices in country music today. Like Faith HIll’s “Breathe,” Lonestar’s “Amazed,” and Thomas Rhett’s “Die A Happy Man” this song will literally sweep you up. If you’re in love, you dance in dimmed lights in the living room to this song. Its beautiful.

“Lynyrd Skynyrd Jones” - Eric Church
Chief is back for a second week in a row (and its up to him, if he’d like to be back next week).
As Corri and I are introducing our new baby to her family, this song is an unexpectedly simple story of family history and a serendipitous ending. Not to mention, we had a hell of a time picking our daughter’s middle name - literally deciding in the moment that I sent out the 1st text and photo to introduce her to our families. Hopefully Teddi Quinn believes her name is as badass as Lynyrd Skynyrd Jones. (should we have we given her a few more’Y’s?)

“Should’ve Known Better” - Carly Pearce
The single coolest thing about Carly Pearce is her fearless honesty. As a fan of music, I love when a songwriter will pour out their truth (because it will feel more representative of others’ truths). Carly announced her new project 29 will be out in two weeks, and added this IG track for us, today!
Carly wrote all the songs for the new project during the final year of her 20s…which was a difficult year in many ways - losing an unbelievably talented and supportive partner in busbee, and then following that unexpected loss with the unexpected dissolution of one of country music’s favorite couples. And throughout all of this, Carly has appeared strong while also sharing the vulnerable times. As simple and inconsequential as a line like “still some nights, I’m crying on the floor” might seem on the surface, its a brave line when you recognize that Carly is sharing a piece of her real life with us & chose to share the weaker points, not just the brave face.
I am super objective when I look at things from the outside. I always wonder, “what’s the other side of this story?” Almost independent of the details or blame, I tend to align with whomever will be the most-honest with me. Its increasingly hard for people to do in a world viewed through an Instagram filter. This song certainly doesn’t feel like a ‘spin’ - I added it to my FIRST 5 list because it feels an authentic representation of Carly’s truth. That’s the greatest gift of Carly Pearce, and the greatest gift in music.

“No Shade” - Brooke Eden
There have been plenty of rainy days and emo moments in the last year. There is a breakup involved in the song just above this one, with the healing process seemingly still taking place. Let’s leap ahead in that evolution…to the big ol’ bright sunny days ahead!
Brooke Eden lifts us out of the rain, and reminds us of something I truly believe in - surround yourself with people that reflect the kind of person you want to be! And don’t let the others into your space. Certainly don’t let them impede your joy. Brooke Eden sets herself free in this song, and sets the rest of us free. This is like musical D3. As I’m finally typing this up today, its DARK already, but when this song is on, it literally (LITERALLY) feels like the sun brightly shining in the sky!

“Near Mrs.” - LANCO
I thought of a few - the aesthetician in Austin when I was too broke to buy a ring, the curly-haired brunette on my middle school bus who would eventually break my heart. But the one was a girl I watched on tv as a kid, who now lives in Tennessee with me. Its the Carmen SanDiego of soulmate searches…
Cuttin in like an Elton John song, LANCO has again found that sweet spot of “Greatest Love Story” and “Born To Love You” - although “Rival” is a damn anthem! Don’t be fooled into thinking this is a somber tale, though. As time plays out, the song turns light-hearted and gives us all a good reason to look back at the ones that almost were, before the one that IS the one.
